1491J “The Big Eye” (Prototype) Circa 1942

This unique Ref. 1491J Chronograph, also known as “The Big Eye,” is the only known chronograph version of the 1491—and the only asymmetric chronograph wristwatch ever made by Patek Philippe. Its oversized minute register, nearly twice the size of the seconds counter, gives it its distinctive nickname.

Such a remarkable piece could only have been made by special request—likely commissioned by Mr. Charles Stern himself, either for a private collector or as a prototype for a project that never materialized.

The extraordinary dial, most likely crafted by Stern Frères, features hand-applied gold indexes, with the outer and inner scales, as well as the signature, meticulously hand-engraved and enameled. The hands are entirely handmade and hand-finished.

Due to the chronograph mechanism and pushers, the case is slightly larger and thicker than the standard Ref. 1491, measuring 35.1 mm.

Powered by the legendary Caliber 13-130, the same movement found in iconic references such as the 130, 1518, 1463, and 2499, this nearly 90-year-old watch remains in honest condition.
